While I'm ...I have to give credit to Neil Marshall. While I'm sure he could have gotten the job to remake fill-in-the-blank video trash treasure from his childhood, with Doomsday, he just ripped a couple of them off, which is the way to go, I think.

I prefer not to see Escape From New York or any other drive-in flick from the '70s or '80s remade, but recasting Snake Plisken as a woman and setting the whole affair in Scotland was a bit novel. I didn't think it worked, but admire the attempt to go against the grain of Hollywood and do something a tad different.Joe Valdezhttp://thisdistractedglobe.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5018214889197226815.post-28204358017340627672009-04-18T16:50:00.000+01:002009-04-18T16:50:00.000+01:00'Spiderwick' was a delight though not quite hittin...'Spiderwick' was a delight though not quite hitting
the mark throughout. The trolls and other baddies were somewhat frightening but possibly
not for today's pre-teens.
'Pathology' was a rather nasty little film which
reminded me of the German film 'Anatomie (2000)'
though that had Franka Potente in the lead role.
Milo Ventimiglia is not a name that springs to mind too readily though he is one of the main
'Heroes' and maintained a similar near deadpan
persona here despite what was going on. Alyssa
Milano was wasted as his fiancee.
'Doomsday' was a load of tosh which had nothing
to commend it - Malcom McDowell doing his now
familiar oddball appearance, Rhona Mitra offering
a well-toned body but little more and some highly
improbable relics - a working steam train is just
about believable but not the unlimited petrol supply. The Scottish film shown at Frightfest last
year about a killer epidemic managed to be more
effective without the special effects though this
film was possibly based on a video game - it had
that feel to it.
'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' had the odd moment
but was otherwise standard Hollywood fare - and
Russell Brand may be the flabour of the moment
but he is as annoying as any of the recent crop.
mgp1449Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
