This worked in a<BR/>number of films but is rather heavy here telling the story of a go-getter narrow boatman and the<BR/>family of his sweetheart which is rooted in the old<BR/>ways. The story is trite and poorly acted but the<BR/>factual element - the working of the barges, the<BR/>scenery and the social life are reasonably shown<BR/>though the MacNeice commentary is rather heavy<BR/>though again of its time.<BR/>'An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge' was a curio.<BR/>It was either an indifferent print or a deliberately<BR/>aged one to evoke, presumably, the period as seen<BR/>in photographs of the Civil War.
