Acting probably better than would have
been in the US version.
Je Vous Trouve Tres Beau: apart from the literally electrifying opening, a sweet film which just had to be French.
Adua e le Compagne: Excellent acting and the downbeat ending was spot on.
Summer Hours: perhaps there are hidden depths but they were so well hidden that this was a bore -
the final scene was so inconsequential that, again,
this could only be French.
Yella: a puzzle of a film which should not be dismissed after a first viewing.
Mademoiselle: typical French inconsequential comedy which was OK but, as you say....so what!
Burnt Out: I disagree. Couture gives an outstanding portrayal of a man who breaks down after his friend kills himself. Ignore the socio-political overtones critics have piled on this film.
It is a very personal one with fine support from the rest of the cast.
Un Honnete Commercant: missed bits of this but the concept was interesting and fairly well done.
Is it not the case that the foreign films shown are those that tend to be either well considered, prize winners or the like and thus generally of better than average quality compared with the greater number of English-speaking films which, almost by definition, will contain a lot of dross. I think that all but one of the eight films are as good as good Hollywood and some better than that.
mgp1449Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
